Dress Pants for PetitesWho Want a Clean Work Fit

Designed to a 26.5-inch length in every size, cut for petite proportions.

Straight answers about petite dress pants, petite workwear pants, and how to dress a petite frame: the fit, the inseam, your proportion, your body shape, and what to wear with them. Every answer comes from The Polished Petite Playbook, our free guide for petite women.

The Fit of Our Petite Dress Pants

Our pants are designed to a 26.5-inch length, cut for the balanced petite. These questions answer how they fit, how to measure, and how to wear them.

How do I know if these pants will fit my body shape and my proportions?

Every pair is designed to a 26.5-inch length, drawn for a balanced petite frame.

We cut one silhouette, a classic straight leg, because it balances every petite frame whether you're an hourglass, pear, apple, or rectangle. Unlike a skinny pant that clings at the calf or a wide leg that swallows your footwear, a straight leg drops cleanly from hip to hem without pulling or bunching.

Standard pants scale length up as size increases. Our length stays locked at 26.5 inches from XS to L, and the rise grades with the size, always on petite proportions. Where the contoured waistband rests comes down to your torso.

  • Balanced torso: The waistband sits cleanly at your natural waist as an intentional high rise. This is the proportion the first release is drawn for.
  • Longer torso: The waistband sits slightly lower, so our high rise looks like a classic mid rise on you, without shortening the leg line.
  • Shorter torso: The waistband sits at your natural waist, the same as on a balanced frame.

Will these petite dress pants be too long on me, and do I have to hem them?

They are designed to a 26.5-inch length in every size, so you start from a petite length rather than a full-length pant taken up.

Every size carries the same 26.5-inch length. Because we draw the rise and the leg line for a shorter frame from the start, hemming is rarely needed.

If your inseam is 25 to 26.5 inches, the length is right. Wear flats at 26.5, a low heel at 26, and a 1 to 1.5 inch heel at 25 to 25.5.

To check before ordering, measure the inside seam of a pair you already love, crotch to hem, and compare it against our 26.5-inch length.

How do I know if this will fit my height?

Fit comes down to proportion rather than total height. Check your measured inseam first for the length, then check your torso to see where the waistband lands.

The two-hand test settles your torso in seconds, over in How do I know my proportion?

  • Balanced Frame: The waistband sits at your natural waist as a true high rise.
  • Longer Torso: The waistband sits slightly lower, fitting more like a mid rise.
  • Shorter Torso: The waistband sits at your natural waist.

How do I measure my inseam?

Stand barefoot against a wall and run a soft tape from the top of your inner leg straight down to your ankle bone. That number is your inseam.

  1. Stand barefoot against a wall.
  2. Run a soft tape from the top of your inner leg straight down to your ankle bone.
  3. That number is your inseam.

Ours is designed to a 26.5-inch length. If yours measures 25 to 26.5 inches, the length is right.

Will these fit me if I have a long torso?

Yes. On a long torso, our high rise fits closer to a mid rise.

The waistband sits slightly lower than on a balanced frame, while the waist-and-hip sizing and the 26.5-inch leg length remain unchanged.

Will these fit me if I have a short torso?

Yes. On a short torso, the waistband sits at your natural waist, the same as on a balanced frame.

The rise is graded for petite proportions in every size, so the fit stays in proportion through XS to L. Your size comes from your waist and hip, and the 26.5-inch length is right if your inseam is 25 to 26.5 inches.

Liz, one of our founders, is 4'11" with a short torso, and she wears a Small.

Why a high rise, and what rise height is best for petite women?

A high-rise trouser is essential for a petite frame because it sits at your natural waist, lengthening your legs and creating a balanced silhouette. Lower rises cut a shorter frame at the wrong spot, which makes legs look shorter.

A comfortable high rise comes down to proportion and construction. Where a badly drafted trouser climbs toward the ribs or gaps at the back, a proper petite high rise uses a contoured waistband drawn with a natural curve. Because it follows the transition from your narrow waist to your hips, it hugs flush against the small of your back, which keeps the trousers in place all day without gaping or digging in, whether you are sitting, standing or moving.

The eye reads your leg from the waistband down, so the higher the waistband sits, the longer the leg looks. It is the single biggest thing you can change about how a petite outfit reads.

A high rise suits most petite frames, and how low, mid and high rises behave on you depends on your torso.

  • Low-rise: Sits right on the hips, cutting across your midsection at its widest point. On a shorter frame that chops your proportions in half and makes your legs look much shorter than they are.
  • Mid-rise: Sits just below the belly button. Safer than a low rise, it still divides your body too low down, misses the chance to lengthen your frame, and often slides down the moment you sit.
  • High-rise: Anchors at your natural waist. That placement gives you the one-third upper body, two-thirds lower body split, and gives your legs their full length.

How do you style a straight-leg pant when you're petite?

Let the clean vertical line do the work. Because the pant runs as an uninterrupted column from your hip down, your job is keeping that line going.

  • Anchor the waist: Tuck your top in, or choose a cropped cut that meets the waistband. Showing the high rise keeps your proportions balanced and your legs long.
  • Play with balance: The trousers are structured and tailored, so they work with everything from a fitted tee to a relaxed button-down with a clean front tuck. Keep your top half defined and the look stays polished.
  • Keep your footwear simple: A straight leg is versatile. Pointed flats, neat loafers, or a subtle heel all work.

Who Our Petite Workwear Pants Are For

Built for petite professionals who demand high-grade corporate tailoring that commands respect and authority, and who are done with endless hemming and flawed sizing that assumes going up a size means you grew taller. We understand the daily struggle of shopping on a shorter frame because we are petite ourselves.

Who are these petite dress pants for?

Petite professionals who command respect in the room and just want workwear dress pants that actually fit.

We made these for the room you walk into. Petite women in the workforce who are done with endless hemming, and with sizing that assumes going up a size means you grew taller. We know it because we are petite ourselves.

Liz is a physician and 4'11". Denise is 5'2" and has been an entrepreneur since her teens.

Most petite pants are a regular pant with the bottom cut shorter. Then as the size goes up, the length gets longer and so does the rise. Going up a size does not make you taller. So we drew ours from the waist down, for petite proportions.

Designed to a 26.5-inch length in every size, in a 400-gram structured stretch fabric, cut and sewn in Los Angeles.

How is The Petite Standard, and its petite sizing, different from other brands?

We draft petite patterns independently instead of shortening a taller size. Every size from XS to L carries the same 26.5-inch inseam and the rise grades on petite proportions, where most brands shorten a standard pattern at the hem and leave everything above it alone.

Two petite women founded The Petite Standard after years of clothes that never fit right. Every pair is cut and sewn in Los Angeles in a limited release.

As standard sizing scales up from Extra Small to Large, traditional brands lengthen both the inseam and the rise, which leaves larger petite sizes dragging on the floor with crotches that hang low. Rise is the distance from the crotch seam up to the waistband, and when it runs too long, fabric pools at the hips, sags through the seat, and pushes the waistband toward the ribs.

  • Static length, graded petite rise: The 26.5-inch inseam never changes. The rise grades with the size, on petite proportions, so sizing up adds room through the waist, hip and thigh without ever adding leg length.
  • No knee-break failure points: A classic straight leg drops in a continuous line from hip to hem, which removes knee-break alignment issues entirely.
  • Tailored vertical line: A true petite rise with an un-tapered straight leg lets the fabric hang clean straight out of the box, with no pulling, no sagging, and no trip to a tailor.
  • What we make: Petite straight-leg trousers, $295, in a 400-gram structured stretch fabric, in Espresso and Midnight.
  • What we promise: Trousers that feel timeless, look flattering, and stay comfortable.
  • What that gets you: Professional workwear that gets you dressed quickly and then stays out of your way. Read more on Our Story.

What sizes do you offer?

XS, S, M and L, every one carrying the same 26.5-inch leg length. Cut and sewn in Los Angeles in Espresso and Midnight.

As sizes scale up from XS to L, the dimensions expand through the waist, hip and thigh, and the rise grades up with them on petite proportions so fuller hips sit comfortably. The leg length stays exactly the same, so a larger size never gains inseam length.

  • Selecting your size: Measure your natural waist and your fullest hip against our size chart. If your measurements fall across two sizes, take the size that matches your hip.
  • Contoured waistband: Cut on a contour in a structured stretch fabric, which closes the back gap on frames with a higher waist-to-hip difference.
  • Future sizing: Widening the size range, including dedicated petite plus grading, is a priority for future releases.

Can I wear these outside of work?

Yes. We made them for the workday, and one pair takes you into the weekend too.

We want every piece to be versatile, so you are not standing in front of your closet every morning deciding what to wear.

Espresso and Midnight are both dark neutrals. They sit with almost everything you already own.

The Buy

What a pair costs and why, how shipping and returns work, and what happens if they do not fit.

Are petite pants worth $295?

Yes, and it is right to stop and think about it. It is a lot, and most of it is labour. Our petite straight-leg trousers are cut and sewn in Los Angeles at fair wages, drafted for petite proportions, and they fit without alterations.

Stopping to think about a $295 pair of pants is the sensible thing to do, and we would rather you asked us than talked yourself into it.

Most of the price is labour. The fabric comes from a mill overseas, and everything after that happens in Los Angeles, the pattern, the cutting, the sewing and the inspection, by people paid properly for the work.

The other reason is the pattern itself. Drafting for petite proportion rather than shortening a taller one means a separate pattern and a separate grade for every size, which is more than most brands will spend on four sizes.

Then there is your time. A Saturday goes to the search. You order four pairs hoping one works, send three back, and the one you keep still goes to the tailor.

None of that shows up on a price tag, and all of it is real. If they are not right, you have 30 days from delivery to send them back, and inside the United States, except Alaska and Hawaii, the return is free.

My partner thinks $295 is too much for a pair of pants. How do I explain it?

Tell them how hard it has been for a petite woman to find clothes that fit, and that this is your opportunity. It is an investment, and what it buys is the feeling of being happy with how you look, and a day not spent shopping for nothing that fits.

It is a fair question from someone who has never spent a whole day shopping and come home with nothing that fit. So tell them what it has actually been like.

For a petite woman, finding clothes that fit well has been genuinely difficult for as long as you have been buying them. You have queued at a tailor's counter on a Saturday. You have rolled a pair at the ankle and left it that way.

You have bought a higher heel than you wanted so a hem would stop dragging, and you have sat in the car after an afternoon of shopping with nothing to show for it. None of that was extravagance. It was the cost of being the shape the pattern forgot. This is your opportunity to stop paying it.

It is an investment, and what it buys is not only a pair of pants. It is the feeling you get when you are happy with the way you look. You carry yourself differently, you feel more confident, and you stop spending whole days shopping for something that does not exist.

Confidence starts with clothes that fit and that suit your age. If for a long time you have felt unable to dress for your age because of what was available in your size, that is worth saying out loud, to yourself and to them.

Then the practical part. Designed to a 26.5-inch length, cut for petite proportion. Inside the United States, except Alaska and Hawaii, returns and exchanges are free for 30 days after delivery, with a prepaid label.

This is a discussion between you and your partner, and it should be.

Measure your inseam first, so you know this pair fits your proportion before the money is ever part of the conversation.

Do you have seasonal sales, or should I wait to buy?

We don't run seasonal sales or markdowns. The price of our petite dress pants stays where it is, so there is no better moment coming.

No sales, no end-of-season markdowns, no holiday weekend codes. It is the same price in October as it is in March. We price it once, properly, rather than marking it up so we can mark it down later. So there is nothing to wait for on the price.

Buy them when you are ready.

I've been burned by petite pants before. Why will these actually work for me?

Most petite pants sag at the crotch or bag at the knees because the brand chopped inches off a regular pattern. We drafted ours independently for a shorter frame.

We have been burned too, and that is most of why this exists. So it is worth saying exactly what goes wrong, because it is never the thing the label tells you. Chopping the hem leaves everything above it where it was.

The crotch seam still sits where a taller woman's does, which is why a pair can be the right length and still feel wrong all day. We drew the rise, meaning the distance from the crotch seam up to the waistband, for petite proportions, so the waistband sits at your natural waist. The leg is straight from thigh to hem, so there is no taper to land in the wrong place on your leg.

The 400-gram structured stretch holds its shape, so it resists the sagging and pooling that shows up by the afternoon. Try them at home with the shoes you actually wear. If they are not right, you have 30 days from delivery to send them back, free inside the United States, except Alaska and Hawaii.

I need to think about it. What should I do in the meantime?

Take your time, it's $295 and thinking is fair. While you think, measure the inseam on a pair you already love and compare it against our 26.5-inch length.

Thinking it over is exactly the right response to a $295 pair of pants, and we'd do the same.

The catch is that most of us close the tab and come back weeks later holding the same question with nothing new to answer it. So give the decision something to stand on. The inseam of a pair you already love, the one whose length you never think about, is the most useful number you can bring back here.

Our pants are designed to a 26.5-inch length in every size.

If you want help reading your own measurements while you decide, the Polished Petite Playbook is free, and it walks you through your proportion and your body shape.

Take the ten minutes, then take all the time you want.

How long does shipping take, and where do you ship?

We pack and ship your order within 1 to 2 business days, with FedEx. Shipping is free to every US state except Alaska and Hawaii, and we also ship to Alaska, Hawaii and other countries.

We ship from California, so delivery time depends on how far you are from us. Once your order ships, FedEx usually delivers within:

  • West Coast: 1 to 2 business days.
  • Central US: 3 to 4 business days.
  • East Coast: 4 to 5 business days.

We email you a tracking number the day your order ships.

Orders to Alaska, Hawaii and other countries also go with FedEx. Those orders pay for shipping, and the cost shows at checkout before you pay. FedEx sets the delivery time for these orders. It is usually longer than inside the mainland US, and customs checks can add days. Our first run does not ship to US territories or to military addresses (APO, FPO, DPO).

We cannot take returns or exchanges on orders shipped to Alaska, Hawaii, or any address outside the United States, except for a damaged or defective product. Where the law gives you a right to return, you pay the return shipping. Please check your size with our fit guide before you order.

If your order ships outside the United States, you are the importer. Your country may charge duties, taxes or customs fees when the parcel arrives, and those are not part of our price.

What payment methods do you accept?

All major cards through Shopify Payments, plus Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay. You pay at checkout.

Checkout runs through Shopify, so the card payment is handled by Shopify Payments and we never see your full card number. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay are there for a one-tap checkout on your phone.

Every price is in US dollars. If you pay in another currency, your bank sets the exchange rate.

If a payment fails, or a method you rely on is missing, email hello@thepetitestandard.co and a person will sort it.

What if they don't fit me perfectly?

On orders shipped inside the United States, except Alaska and Hawaii, you have 30 days from delivery to start a free return or exchange. The pants must be unwashed and undamaged, with the hang tag still attached. Orders shipped to Alaska, Hawaii, or outside the United States cannot be returned or exchanged, except for a damaged or defective product. The full rules are in our Return and Refund Policy.

We offer an exchange first. If the size or the color is not right, we send you a new size or color at no cost. If you would rather have a refund, we refund it to the way you paid, within 10 business days of getting your return.

Tell us what was wrong. Too long, too short, the waist, the hip, the rise. Nine times out of ten the answer points at a different size, and we would rather send you the pair that fits than leave you without it.

To start, go to Start a return and print your prepaid label.

The best return is the one that never happens, so compare your inseam and your hip to the size chart before you order.

How do I start a return or an exchange?

Go to Start a return within 30 days of delivery, print your prepaid label, tape it on the box and drop it at the carrier named on the label.

Returns and exchanges are free on orders shipped inside the United States, except Alaska and Hawaii. You pay nothing to send a pair back. The 30 days start the day the carrier marks your order delivered.

The pants must be unwashed and undamaged, with the hang tag still attached.

We offer the exchange first, a new size or color at no cost. If you would rather have a refund, it goes back to the way you paid, within 10 business days of your return reaching us.

How many pairs are there?

It is a limited release, across two colours and four sizes.

It is small on purpose. Getting one garment right for petite proportions is harder than getting ten garments roughly right, and a small run is the size where two founders can stand at the cutting table and check every quarter inch themselves.

When a size sells out, it is gone until the next run. See the colours and sizes on the product page.

You are a new brand. Why should I trust you?

Fair question. We are new, so here is what you can check for yourself before and after you buy.

We are two petite women, Elizabeth Cadag and Denise Chicano, and we made these pants for ourselves first. Every pair is cut and sewn in Los Angeles, and every pair is checked before it ships. We check that the waistband lies flat, and we measure the length.

You pay through Shopify Payments, so we never see your full card number. Your order ships with FedEx within 1 to 2 business days, and you get a tracking number by email.

If the size or the color is wrong, we offer an exchange first, at no cost. Inside the United States, except Alaska and Hawaii, returns and exchanges are free for 30 days after delivery, and we send a prepaid label.

And you can write to us. Email hello@thepetitestandard.co and a person replies to every message.

The Design

Every choice we made and why: the single pleat, the fabric, the contoured waistband, the colours, and where they are sewn.

Why a single pleat?

A single pleat is functional rather than decorative. It puts structure into the front of the pant and releases extra fabric where you need it, so you can sit, bend, and get through the fuller days without the front pulling or creasing.

A pleat is a fold stitched at the waistband and released below, and that fold does quiet work all day. A flat front has to fit you precisely across the hip and thigh, and when it doesn't, it pulls into horizontal creases across the front. The pleat holds extra fabric exactly where your body needs it when you sit, bend, and walk, so nothing strains and the front lies flat. It also puts structure into the front of the pant and holds the leg in a clean vertical from the hip.

That same give keeps them comfortable day to day, so you can sit through a long meeting without thinking about your waistband. We chose a single pleat because the fabric is heavy enough that a second one would only add bulk. One pleat works across most petite shapes.

The old warning that pleats add width was written about a different pant, a low rise in heavy cloth with three deep pleats. A single pleat on a high rise in a structured stretch fabric does the opposite, and once you feel it sit flat through a full day, you understand why we kept it.

Why a straight leg?

A straight-leg trouser is the foundation of a petite wardrobe because it flatters every body shape, from hourglass and pear to rectangle. Dropping cleanly from the hip in an uninterrupted vertical line, it lengthens without the ankle-pinch of a skinny cut or the volume of a wide leg.

Beyond the timeless look, a well-drafted straight leg is practical on a shorter frame. Because the leg stays the same width from thigh to hem, it accommodates different knee placements and moves with you through the day. Drawn for petite proportions from the start, it gives you a tailored fit off the rack.

A wide leg or a bootcut has its shaping point at the knee, and that point was drawn for an average leg. Every petite woman has a different length from her hip to her knee, so on most of us that shaping lands in the wrong place. It also breaks the leg into two halves, and two short halves read shorter than one long line.

What are they made of?

These petite dress pants are made from a structured stretch fabric, 70% nylon, 20% rayon and 10% spandex, designed to feel effortless while keeping you looking sharp all day.

We wanted something that holds up to a busy schedule without feeling stiff or high-maintenance. Three things make it work.

  • The right weight: At 400 grams the fabric has enough heft to hang in a clean, smooth line from your hip instead of clinging or looking flimsy.
  • No baggy knees: It has an active stretch that moves with you when you sit or walk, then springs back into place, so it resists the stretched-out knee pouches by lunchtime.
  • A completely matte finish: There is no cheap shine. The surface is smooth and entirely matte, polished under office lights, and it machine washes cold on a gentle cycle. You get the tailored look of a traditional trouser with the comfortable feel of your favourite everyday wear.

Will the knees bag out?

Nothing ruins a clean silhouette faster than stretched-out knee pouches by midday. Bagging happens when a fabric loses its memory under repeated bending, and it hits petite frames harder because a standard pattern puts the bend in the wrong place.

Even a clean straight leg that flows straight down without a knee dart still needs the right fabric behind it. Two choices do the work here.

  • Active snap-back: The structured stretch fabric returns to shape every time you stand, so it resists sagging and settling in.
  • Petite-drafted proportions: Because the pattern is drawn for a petite frame, the garment moves with you, which takes the daily stress off the fabric. Follow the care instructions and it keeps its shape wear after wear, so your trousers look as sharp at five o'clock as they did at eight.

Where are they made?

These petite dress pants are made in USA of imported fabric, cut and sewn in our Los Angeles workroom, and every pair is inspected before it ships.

The fabric is imported, and we say so plainly because it's true and because a made in USA claim has rules we take seriously. Everything after the fabric, the cutting, the sewing, the pressing and the final inspection, happens in Los Angeles, a short drive from where we both live. That closeness was a deliberate choice.

Petite proportion lives or dies in quarter inches, and a quarter inch is far easier to hold when you can stand at the cutting table and check it yourself, which we've done more than once. The fit that reaches you is the one we approved in the room, rather than one that arrived in a container. Los Angeles also happens to be one of the few places left in the country where a small brand can still make clothes nearby instead of an ocean away, and we'd like to keep it that way.

Before any pair ships, it's inspected. The length measured flat, the waistband checked for a flat, even line across the back, the pleats and seams checked against the pattern. As with any tailored garment, a small variation is normal.

A pair outside what we consider normal doesn't ship.

What colours are available?

Two colours in the first run: Espresso, a deep warm brown, and Midnight, a deep navy with a little softness in it.

Espresso is a deep, warm brown that reads true brown in daylight. Midnight is a deep navy with a little softness in it, the navy that goes with everything a true navy goes with and a few things it doesn't. We chose two colours for the first release rather than a rainbow, and it was on purpose.

A pant you repeat is the foundation of a small wardrobe, and a repeated pant has to go with everything you own, which points you toward the quiet, deep colours the eye fits as one column from waist to floor. Both of these sit happily as the main colour of a wardrobe rather than an accent, and they play well with the neutrals and lighter tones already in your closet. You'll notice neither of them is black, and that's deliberate too.

Black is the colour most petite women reach for by default, and it pairs with fewer of the colours that flatter a face than a deep brown or a deep navy does.

Match the shoe to the pant, a chocolate or deep tan under Espresso, a navy under Midnight, and the line runs unbroken to the floor. Both colours come in the same fabric, the same sizes, and the same 26.5-inch length.

What silhouettes do you make, and why only one?

We prefer not to design unflattering silhouettes. The first release is one classic straight leg, because it is the cut that suits every petite frame, whatever your shape.

A straight leg drops in an uninterrupted line from hip to hem, so it lengthens rather than interrupts, and it works on an hourglass, a pear, an apple and a rectangle alike. A skinny narrows at the ankle and cuts the line of the leg short. A cropped hem sits at a different point on every woman, because the distance from knee to ankle varies more than most brands allow for, so the same crop that suits one petite frame stops another at her widest point.

Neither is a silhouette we want to put on you. So we tailor to what flatters a petite frame and leave the rest. One cut, drawn properly, in every size.

Do the pockets hold a phone, and are there belt loops?

Deep front slash pockets that easily fit a smartphone, minimalist back welt pockets that keep the silhouette smooth and clean, and sturdy belt loops for your favorite classic work belts.

These pants feature deep front slash pockets that easily fit a smartphone, along with minimalist back welt pockets designed to keep the silhouette completely smooth and clean. We also added sturdy belt loops across the waistband, so you can easily pair them with your favorite classic work belts.

Do these pants wrinkle during a long day of sitting or a morning commute?

They handle wrinkles well. Most creases from sitting fall out as you move, so you won't spend the day looking crumpled.

The structured stretch blend (70% nylon, 20% rayon, 10% spandex) springs back as you move, so most creases from sitting fall out as you walk. Like any clothes they can pick up slight wear lines over a long day, but this fabric handles them incredibly well and won't leave you looking like a crumpled mess.

How do I wash these pants, and will they shrink?

Yes, they can shrink, and we would rather tell you now. Rayon is a soft, breathable fiber, and it is naturally sensitive to heat. In our own wear-testing, we saw varying amounts of shrinkage depending on laundry heat levels.

Our founders are personally refining fabric-stabilizing methods before production. We want your pants to arrive in the best possible state.

To care for them: machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Do not bleach. Tumble dry low. Cool iron if needed. Dry clean recommended. Keep the heat low, because rayon is sensitive to it.

Can I put these pants in the dryer?

Yes, on low. The care steps say tumble dry low, and keeping the heat low matters, because the rayon in the fabric is sensitive to heat.

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, do not bleach, and use a cool iron if needed. Dry cleaning is recommended.

Will the dark colors (Espresso and Midnight) fade in the wash?

To keep the deep Espresso and Midnight shades looking rich and sharp, wash them inside out with similar dark colors.

Wash them inside out and keep them with other darks, and the depth holds. The colour sits inside a high-density matte fabric rather than on top of it, so it doesn't lift the way a cheap dark cotton does.

Wash cold on a gentle cycle, do not bleach, and tumble dry low. Dry cleaning is recommended.

Is the fabric see-through?

Not at all. The heavy, 400-gram structured fabric is much thicker than a standard thin dress pant, and both Espresso and Midnight are deep, matte colors with complete, opaque coverage.

We use a heavy, 400-gram structured fabric for our pants, which is much thicker than a standard thin dress pant. Both our Espresso and Midnight shades are deep, matte colors that offer complete, opaque coverage, so nothing shows through, even under bright office lighting.

Does the fabric have a shiny finish?

No. It's a completely matte fabric with no sheen at all. A smooth, professional finish that stays deep and dark through the workday.

Cheap stretch materials often have a glossy, athletic-wear look that catches the light in all the wrong places, but our pants have a smooth, professional finish. Both our Espresso and Midnight shades stay deep, dark, and perfectly polished throughout the workday.

Why do petite trousers gap at the waist?

Waist gap usually comes down to how a pant is scaled. Most brands shrink a standard pattern, shortening the length while keeping proportions meant for a taller frame, which often leaves the waistband as a straight, flat strip of fabric rather than a curved arc.

Human bodies are not straight cylinders. Our waists curve inward above the hips, and a straight waistband cannot hug the natural hollow of the lower back. When you sit or move, the top edge stands away from the body, and that is the gap.

A true petite trouser solves it by drafting a contoured waistband from scratch, curving the pattern to match the body's natural lines so it stays flush, comfortable and secure all day.

A stretch waistband usually means giving up the tailored line for a little give. Ours is a contoured waistband cut in the same structured stretch fabric as the pant, so it moves with you all day and lies flat, with no elastic insert.

Our Story

Who we are, what we stand for, and what a Polished Petite means.

Who started The Petite Standard, and why?

Elizabeth Cadag, a physician, and Denise Chicano, an entrepreneur. Both are petite, both are Filipino immigrants, and both spent years buying dress pants that always needed altering.

You already know the routine. Everything fits but the length, so you buy them anyway, and they hang in your closet until you find the time to get them shortened.

We did that for years, thinking it was just part of being short, until we stopped waiting and made the petite dress pants we had been looking for. That is where The Petite Standard started.

We both immigrated from the Philippines, where most of the women we grew up around are petite too.

We each had our own workaround, so some pairs went to the tailor and the rest got rolled, or folded under, or worn with a heel we did not want to be in, just to keep the hem off the floor.

For a long time we did not know how to dress it either. We wanted to look put together and could not work out why nothing looked right on us, so we went and learned it, studying petite proportions and the different shapes and sizes a petite frame comes in, and what actually flatters it instead of what happens to be on trend.

Why did you start with dress pants?

Because nobody has built a brand for petite working women, and a pair of dress pants that fits is where a work wardrobe starts.

Most people tell us to just get it hemmed. Shortening a pant leaves everything above the hem exactly where it was.

Petite has been an afterthought for a long time. At most apparel brands it is still a small section tucked away at the edge of the line, one rack where our size is either missing or already sold out.

Modern women do not have a standard uniform the way men have a suit and tie. We wanted a shop where everything on the rack was already ours. So that is what we are building, and the dress pants are the beginning.

We also want every piece to be versatile, so one pair takes you through a workday and then through the weekend, and you are not standing in front of your closet every morning deciding what to wear.

What does “The Polished Petite” mean?

Refined, confident, and unmistakably herself. A Polished Petite knows what works for her and chooses accordingly.

Looking polished has never needed a logo. It comes from knowing what fits you, wearing colors that work on you, and clothes comfortable enough to carry you through whatever the day turns into.

What standard does a Polished Petite keep?

She keeps a standard for what earns a place in her closet, so everything in it already fits her, and whatever she reaches for looks good on her.

She has the courage to ignore a trend, because her standard is her own. She is always put together, and she walks into a room seen for her competence before she says a word.
